Connor went to his first chess tournement today. I was impressed .This thing was HUGE. I certainly didn't expect to be that many children there, and certainly didn't expect to see 4-5 year olds. There were also, adults, and highschool kids.
We arrived at 8 am. The kids sat around and played in  the cafeteria until the tournement started. We only expected it to be a few hours. Turns out it goes all day, past 5 PM. My goodness. I didn't even bring a book.
We left and came back at 3 PM.

Connor's school has about 32 kids on the chess team. I think about 12 to 14 showed up for the tournement. They do it really cool. You start off playing kids on your own level (beginner for Connor) and then people who win that round play someone else who won that round. If they lost they play someone else that lost. There are 5 rounds. The last round people who won 4 play others who won 4. If they lost 3, they play someone that lost 3. You get the point.

Connor lost all 5. He was a very good sport about it. He will play another tournement on the 29th.
There is a girl on his team that started last year and didn't even know how the peices moved when she started. She lost all 5 rounds in her first 3 tournements. By the end of the year, she won a tournement. Connor goes to school everyday at 7 AM and practices chess with the team, so I am expecting him to get better. I already have seen a big difference in the way he plays in the past month.

Connor is playing another beginner. He won.

Some of the other players on his chess team

Connor gets some pre tournement strategy tips from his teacher/ chess coach, Mr. Nguyen

Nothing better than a room full of sugared up kids.

Joel. We just had to get a picture.

Connor yucking it up about somethig...

Oh jeez, as if the chess kids don't get enough flack as it is, they thought it'd be a good idea to dress them up too?

yeah, but what mothers consider cute and what peers deem acceptable ofttimes clash.
