Supernanny
Apr. 6th, 2008 06:49 pmIn my previous post I talked about how hard parenting is. That being said, I don't understand these parents on Supernanny with 6 years olds that hit and throw and scream and take an hour to get their teeth brushed and cannot wipe their own butts. How in the world are they going to deal with teenagers when they cannot handle small children.
We try to be touchy feely with Con and likely are being women, but I swear I don't see anything wrong with occasionally flicking a little unruly bastard in the ear and telling them to shut up, behave, and do what I say. My big problems with Connor when he was little were mostly him not doing the right things when he was away from me, not so much with not being able to handle him when he was with me.
I swear, these people act like they are afraid of their children.

Date: 2008-04-07 12:04 am (UTC)Again, I am not a parent, but I do believe I was taught sound parenting principles (by folks OTHER than my parents, BTW). One of the things I learned is that you've got to win battles, and win them early. My 5-year-old nephew insulted me, my husband and the entire family at Christmas. I MADE sure he paid for that...his own parents actually got involved and took care of that, as I had made clear he would have consequences for that...and he would have from me, if nobody else. You know what? Since he hasn't gotten away with any crap with me, he now respects me. At 5-6, you NEED to know the adults are in charge. His parents were doing way too much reasoning with him -- I think he's better behaved for them now too.
I think too many parents try to be friends to their children. Friends are, or should be, equals -- parents and children cannot be unless both are adults. Guess what? Your (parents in general) role is to raise your children, not to befriend them...that's for them to find friends. Snotty, bratty children drive me up the wall...but ultimately, that's not the child's fault. :(
I think you've definitely got the right idea with Connor. Good luck with that. *hugs*

Date: 2008-04-07 04:11 pm (UTC)Cheyenne will be 15 in August. I can count the times she's been spanked on one hand. But I never ever had those sorts of problems with her. It's ridiculous. How in the world will they deal with them as teenagers, but also how will those kids deal in the real world as adults?
