Red Belt test

This morning, Connor had to go test for his red belt for Kook sul won. It takes about an hour and a half for everyone to do their test and the graduation ceremony where the students get their new belts The test is on their forms, holds, and they have to break a board. What they do to break the board depends on what belt they are. I have a video of Connor doing it, and then a video of a brown belt doing it.

Note in Con's video, when the board breaks, the top piece flies up and hits the poor woman hard in the head. She took it like a trooper and high fived him afterwards. I filmed it, but my sister is the one that noticed her head snap back and her hair fly back. Sure enough, a few minutes later, she had a big egg on her head. It didn't bleed, but Karen urged someone to get her an icepack for her head. She is the one to give Con his new belt, and he was still apologizing then. She told him it wasn't his fault. That was nice. He felt really bad.

There is a woman in Con's class that recieved her brown belt today. I think she is just great. She decided at age 58 that she was going to learn to ice skate. So she did. she competes. She then decided at age 60, she was going to learn a martial art. She rocks. She had a bit of trouble breaking her board, and I gave up on the filming, so I don't have it. She did eventually break her board with a spin kick.

And here is Con doing some warm up kicks. I wish I had gotten the ones where he kicks straight up. It always impresses me. I was watching one time that he kicked straight up and he knocked himself in the face with his knee.

We picked up his friend, Max, and took them out to lunch for sushi. Max was kind enough to help make a video reenacting Con's board breaking and knocking that woman in the face. Ouchie.

Although I didn't watch the vids, I love this post! Congrats Connor! And that is really cool about that older lady! (the one who took up karate at 60, NOT the poor thing that got hit by a board! Hope she's okay and hope Connor got over it -- it really wasn't his fault!)

He has awesome form and he has some power breaking those boards! I hope my nephew stays disciplined enough and follows through with it to move up the belts like Connor is doing. Congrats to him and you have every right to be proud of that boy!

So how thick are those boards? I didn't even notice her getting smacked until you pointed it out. That got a replay or two - fun times.

When I was in third grade my scout group had a little halloween party. We were blind folded and spun around before taking a few whacks at a pinata. I hit my troop leader woman in the leg with a bat :(

The boards are the usual 1-inch pine. He said he hurt his foot (I saw him rubbing it) but it is fine today.

I nailed someone in the knee with a bowling ball when I was little.
