Connor's humiliation
Jul. 10th, 2008 12:32 pmConnor was set up with 2 volunteer jobs this Summer. The first one he has completed. It was 3 weeks of working for Herman Park Conservancy. It was great and he loved it. The other one was volunteering at the Children's Museum of Houston. He also loved this one. He gained great confidence in getting up, taking a bus and a train to work and doing something good, productive and helpful.
My sister took the call this morning that Connor was fired from his volunteer position at the Children's Museum of Houston. He was written up yesterday for cursing where small children and parents could hear him. A couple of parents complained.
Karen and I were FURIOUS this morning. I started looking into more volunteer jobs, because he certainly isn't going to sit around the house and watch TV because he screwed up. I was really hoping he could volunteer as a dog walker for the City of Houston BARC program, but it turns out he has to be 16 years old.
I DID set everything going for him having to take some Math classes with Kumon learning centers. It is even less expensive than I hoped ($50 registration, $30 activity fee, and $110 a month) He needs it anyway. On the Stanford tests, he scores Post High School on every subject except Math, and he scores at just grade level and he has to struggle to get that score. I would really like him to get more comfortable with Math before he starts high school in the fall.
Karen woke him up and talked to him before she left for the office. She remained calm and managed to not call him any names. While we were on the phone, idiot, moron, dumb ass, jackass, and other names were flying. I am glad she didn't let them fly at him.
Yes, she and I curse like sailors. We have told him that we know he is doing it with his friends. I have told him that he is dead if he ever gets caught cursing at school, the YMCA, or the library or in his friends' parents' house. I have told him that if he makes it a habit he is going to slip and say it in front of me, his aunt, or in school. It is not okay. I know it is possible, because my parents cursed in front of us all the time growing up, and Karen and I didn't curse in front of our parents, our friends' parents, school, work, etc. It is completely possible. If I cannot curse having the horrible lack of impulse control I had, so can he. Just don't be stupid.
He has to wash his volunteer shirt and take it back up to the museum tomorrow (even if they don't want it back) and he has to write an exceptionally eloquent letter of apology stating what he did wrong, why it was wrong, and how very sorry he is for doing it and give it to the head of the volunteer program with the shirt.
Karen told Con how much he humiliated himself because today every one would be talking about what he did and how he got fired. She said, "Whatever cute girl or cool guy who was near you that you were trying to impress with your big grown up mouth will know that you got fired and they are going to think of you as one of those ghetto kids that you dislike so much." This is especially humiliating for Connor because he is so damn arrogant all the time thinking he is so much better than most people. I hope this is the last time that he ever does something stupid like this and gets fired from a job. I hope it is a good learning experience for him. He really enjoyed volunteering at the museum. He does get to get his certification for his volunteer hours because he had to do 40 hours over the Summer. We had him volunteer any free time he had during the week, so he did actually complete his 40 hours.
He is definitely welcome back at the Herman Park Conservancy next year. They were very pleased with him and said they would love to have him back. Hopefully, he will get picked to be a Zoo volunteer next year (he didn't make it this year- about 300 kids apply for 150 positions and he was one of the youngest and had no volunteer or work experience).
I am very disappointed in him. I hope he has enough sense to be disappointed in himself as well.
