Porky has finished the bulk of his heart worm treatment shots. The really bad dose was Friday, and he had a smaller one Saturday AM. I got to pick him up at 4 PM. He was very happy to see Connor and I.  He was reeeeeaaaaallly effing high. He spent quite a bit of time standing on the chair staring out into space. When he wasn't doing that, he was sleeping in the chair. The kitten circled him and he couldn't care less. He did get up off the chair, walk out of the living room, past the back door, through the kitchen to the entry way, and took a giant piss on the rug in the entryway.  Then he walked back and stood by me with his head held down. *sigh*

On a high note, those shamwow things? Soak up piss like crazy.

He felt much better today. The first thing he did when I let him out of the crate was to go to his dish for breakfast. YAY! He walked around for a bit with his bear in his mouth. He did try to chase a kitten, which resulted in him being crated for a bit.  He simply cannot get excited. Is very bad for him.

He needs to stay calm for another month, then he gets a shot that is a heart worm preventative. After that, he will get a test to see if all the heart worms are gone. When he is all healthy, we will work on finding a home for him with someone that 1) will make sure to give him a heart worm preventative pill every month and 2) wants and can handle a dog this needy with previous abuse issues.

Also, he lost 1/2 a lb. over the past month. WTF?!?!?

Keeping a dog calm for a month isn't easy!!!! Glad to know he is on the road to recovery though.

1/2 lb in a month? That doesn't sound bad to me?

he is severely underweight. You can see all ribs and hip bones. We have been trying really hard to feed him and get some weight on him and he loses half a pound

Could the heart worm be the cause of the weight loss... I hope he gets to gain weight soon... maybe with the fact he has to rest a great deal, can give him a bit more food, ... I hope he gains weight!

I know he doesn't eat a lot - and that you're already paying a lot for his treatment. But I haven't seen any dog snub roasted chicken or scrambled hamburger. You may be able to buy it in bulk cheap and then freeze some and take it out every day to defrost. The most important thing is to feed him high calorie food, like puppy food or rich food.

we give him puppy food with some fattening soft dog food mixed in. He has been eating more which is why I can't understand how he lost weight.

The dr is telling us no people food (but sister is sneaking him hot dogs) and I give him cheap non dairy cheese slices.

He will eat after his treatment is done.

Dogs will eat after they feel stable enough to handle it.

When we first got "Gumby" he wouldn't eat as much...he had bad diarrhea. But now that it's cleared up, he will eat all of his food and whatever else you want to give him (he likes Baby Goldfish crackers and pork rinds).

P.S. It takes about a couple of weeks of regular feeding once he's all stable and better to get him fattened up. >____> "Gumby"'s ribs were showing when we got him and now they've got a nice layer of fat growing around them.
