I need someone to enlighten me. This gay marriage thing. Why is it that anyone cares if they get married. I am not looking for an argument. I don't personally know anyone who is against same sex marriage, so I have no way of knowing what the rational is. So if there is anyone out there that can take the time to engage in respectful discourse about this, please respond.

I'm all for gay marriage. I have a friend who just went through a messy separation with her partner, and the legal rights are so hard to deal with concerning their relationship, the kids, and insurance (who's responsible for their 3 children?) when the state doesn't recognize the union.

I'm hardly an expert, but the people who've explained their opposition to me claim that the Bible states marriage should be between a man and a woman, so same sex marriage is a sin. Since I'm not a Christian, and I really don't know the Bible, so I'll have to take their word on the subject. Feh.

but..two things.
1) if it is a legal thing, I think that the church should be nowhere in it and everyone should HAVE to have a civil union. They can do a church thing if they want
or
2) if we are going to recognize church marriages as legal, and a church chooses to sanctify a same sex marriage, then shouldn't the state have to recognize that as well?

Hardcore religious conservatives don't want the civil unions recognized, because it threatens their beliefs. And many same-sex couples that hold strong religious beliefs would like the option of a church marriage as well as a legally recognized union, and many churches would agree. I don't think the state will ever recognize church-only marriages, something about that separation of church and state thingumy...

It's not just about a piece of paper, or the recognition - there are so many facets to marriage, legally and socially, that nothing less than fully legalizing gay marriages seems fair to me.
