Funny Connor
Sep. 19th, 2007 11:53 pmReading about some morons in another community talking about their little boy wanting to use the men's room at age 6 reminded me of how hard it was to let go and allow Connor to use the men's room instead of going into the women's room with us.
We always tried to give him independence (and he was always a very independent child) but letting him walk away from us in a store was just a terrifying thought. I was horrified at the thought of him going into a men's room in a store because ohmygodallmenareevilandwillrapehim. I am aware I am overwrought with paranoia. I am at least trying to deal with it.
We taught him everything we could and told him that if anyone does anything that makes the little voice in his head or stomach tell him that it is wrong and dangerous, than it is. It is better to be embarassed than to be hurt. The first time the opportunity came up to let him use the men's room after our decision to was when my sister, Fini, took him to JCPennies.
Fini stood by the men's room door and reiterated all the things we told him and let him go. She was standing guard outside the bathroom door and a man walked by and went in. Fini didn't mean to menaced him with a nasty look as he walked by, but she was a chick just hanging out by the men's room door waiting for her little baby nephew and probably looking stressed . While he was in there, Fini heard Connor say, "You better not touch me, because if you do, I will yell and my Fini will come in here and kill you!" The guy turned on his heels and left immediately.
I love that kid. He cracks me up.
