Know what really gets me in a bouncy worky mood in the AM? The Theme from Shaft.
Shut Yo Mouth!

I posted about Con's great TAKS scores. I finally recieved the scores and have been trying to scan them, but my PC is not talking to my scanner. All of the scores were really good. All of the reading was post high school, except reading vocabulary, which was only12.9 (as in grade 12). I was really impressed. All the other things were various levels of grades in high school and jr. high, except Math which was 5.9 which means he is right on course and ready to start 6th grade next year.

I lift that page to see his progress report. *sigh* He has an F in reading. READING. All he freaking does is read. In TWO languages no less. POST HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL. Failing it. He also has an F in Science. That is usually one of his highest grades because he digs it so much.

I was the same way. Drove my parents crazy. I would test in the 99th percentile on standardized tests, then make horrific grades.

He honestly cannot see the correlation between his complete lack of effort in school and his grades he brings home. I pity the hell out of him when he says, "I hope I get some A's" Oh honey, that is not going to happen. Sheesh. Hopefully it will click with him soon. He is looking at a Summer of no TV or game boy. He earns tv and gameboy time based on grades. Last report card was so bad, he owed us 45 minutes in homework time a week.

I was the same way in middle/high school. In a lot of cases, the more intelligent somebody is, the more easily they become bored with the standardized material in the class, and cast it aside. Freshman year, while everyone else was reading Angus Bethune, I had my head in Lord of the Rings and 1984. Slight complexity difference. He'll figure things out eventually, but I can sympathize with him.

a big part of his and my problem is the ADHD.

He is starting to come around. Until very recently he was making good improvements (doing homework without prompting, doing his best instead of bare minimum) but he is falling back into his old routine. Maybe a summer of studying and no tv will help. I am not gonna scream, I am not going to ground, I am just not going to reward him for shitty work. His choice in whether or not he gets tv and gameboy. He chose no.

Well, now I can REALLY sympathize (grew up with the same little problem). That was always a big roadblock for me; actually getting around to doing schoolwork outside of school. While I never had the hyperactivity problem (not to my knowledge at least), I still get very easily distracted.

Case in point, I'm online looking at LJ instead of concentrating on preparing for my Government final in 4 hours.

My sister is very bright but tends to get lazy. She rushes at school to be done before everyone else. I think she's afraid of comming off as "slow" even though we all know she is very bright.

I think you are doing the best thing. I can't help but feel sorta sorry for the guy. And feel sorry for the fustration I am sure you are feeling.

Ah, one of life's challenges... being a good parent. hehe.

I used to get much more worked up about it. Not going to do that. Made me sick, angry and resentful. Not how I want to live, and isn't going to help him at all. I had told the school to flunk him in 3rd grade. Better for him to be embarressed now instead of later, but they wouldn't do it.

My sister was trying to figure out how they could promote him to 6th when he has had one to two F's on each report card. I explained that he was not making f's in the same thing..he would make an F in a subject one grade period, then make a b next time...the little bugger is passing elementary school with a D average I think. Ah...I am swelling with pride. I miss his first 2-3 years of A's and some B's

i had the same problem. the only rememdy for me was to take two years and see what the reall world was like after i finished high school. after i saw what assholes managers at retail stores are and how much more i can make as a psychologist....it was a no brainer. i'm starting my freshman year of college this fall.hopefully it doesn't take him that long to wake up. in fact, if you think a scred straight approach would work, send him my e-mail. if not, then at least he could jhave someone to help him with his homework at times...i adore taching kids, i just don't wanna do it full time. not all kids are worth helping.
