Ironically Gonzales is probably the least extreme candidate on Bush's short list. I've heard he's pro-choice, which would anger Bush's theocratic base.
It's a no-win situation for Bush: if he picks a moderate he pisses off his base; if on the other hand he picks a neanderthal reactionary theocrat 1) the nominee will be filibustered and nothing on the administrations legislative agenda will be voted on, and 2) if such a nominee is confirmed the backlash will cost the Republicans control of congress in the 2006 election. Bush may just risk a filibuster and ultimate defeat of a far right-wing nominee so he can say at least he tried before settling on a more moderate nominee.
