TMC is having a whole month of Oscar winning films this month. I think there are a lot of movies that I SHOULD have seen but have not. I read books sometimes for that reason. They are a part of popular culture and I am missing out on them or at least the references because I haven't read certain books or seen certain movies.

I am currently watching "An American in Paris"

Gene Kelly was such an unbelievable dream boat.

Earlier I watched the original Lolita and Mildred Pierce. Last weekend I watched The Harvey Girls and Bandwagon (I didn't like Bandwagon).

I think next I will watch Citizen Kane or Casablanca.

You're missing a word there. It's "Am American Werewolf in Paris." I should know; I've owned a video store.

:-D

Maybe she's referring to a porn starring Paris Hilton?

Actually, there IS a movie by that name... it was a "sequel" to "An American Werewolf in London" that came out in the late 90s.

I am aware of that movie (but only because of the hottie that stars in it)

I meant he must have been shitting me that he thought that was the one I was referring to.

The movie of "Lolita" differs from the book (which is far more disturbing).

I found the Humbert character in this one far more disturbing than the Jeremy Irons' portrayal.

I should read the book.

I've read the book and watched both of the movies. I am a huge Lolita fan (but so is Chelle).

Well if it's any indication of the evolution of the book's life, the 1997 Irons movie was pretty spot-on, save for the deletions (you have to see the deleted scenes as well). It's all canon/book proper. Well, aside from the casting of a 14-year-old Dominique Swain.

I used to have the whole thing on my playlist at youTube, but apparently now some of the sections are missing...something about the original poster's account getting messed with.

It's a good but creepy read told from the point of view of the protagonist (Humbert) who is also the villain.

I finally watched "Rear Window" for the first time. Hitchcock was a freakin' genius.

Makes me sad for all the rest, and makes me realize that most movies today are crap.

No. Heard all about it...even visited Alcatraz as a child...but have never seen it. I also barely missed "Vertigo."

Anybody ever heard the classic radio play, "Sorry, Wrong Number?" Ah, those were the days...when special effects were minimal and you just had to rely on a good script and good acting to get you by.

There was a special on some PBS network contrasting the dancing styles of the 2 dancing icons of that era, Astaire and Kelly.

Astaire was all elegance and grace. The point was that his movements were all controlled and graceful.

Kelly was athletic and energetic and a coiled spring. He also apparently was a perfectionist. These things tended to show in his performances.

I enjoy watching Kelly and Danny Kaye over Astaire.

I also really dig Ray Bolger

Remind me sometime to tell you about what happened during the filming of THE PIRATE when Gene Kelly stuck up for The Nicholas Brothers.

The Nicholas Brothers showed up for filming and while they were waiting for the set to be lit and whatever they played cards. They were repeatedly asked by the director to rehearse the dance number they were doing with Gene Kelly ("Be A Clown") and The Nicholas Brothers ignored him and continued playing cards.

The director (I believe it was Liza's dad, Vincent Minelli) went to Gene Kelly and asked him to get The Nicholas Brothers to rehearse so that he could see how it would look on camera. Gene Kelly told Vincent Minelli to leave The Nicholas Brothers alone and just go ahead and set up the shot. They'd be ready.

Came time to shoot the dance routine, Gene Kelly and The Nicholas Brothers did it PERFECTLY in ONE TAKE.

Unfortunantly that dance number was unseen for many years because the prints of THE PIRATE shown in the South edited that dance number out. And even when THE PIRATE was shown on TV, it was those edited prints.

But if you've got Turner Classic Movies then you will see that number as it has been restored and that's the print they show. I don't think they ever found a print with the "Voodoo" dance number between Gene Kelly and Judy Garland as it was removed and legend has it all the negative were burned because it was deemed too erotic.

THE PIRATE is really a loopy movie that everybody who's a fan of Gene Kelly and Judy Garland should check out. They never made a musical like that before and never would again.

Turner Classic Movies has been running their 31 DAYS OF OSCAR for a long time now. I'm actually kinda on the fence about it because in February TCM used to devote the month to black films/directors but replaced it with 31 DAYS OF OSCAR.

They show so many damn good films in this month it's honestly hard for me to me but so mad. But of my DVRs get a workout during this month, lemme tell you.
