When the storm takes out my power, I shall be twittering. If you want to be my twitter buddy, my id is sereneorange.
Karen and I just chopped and sawed down branches from trees in hopes to keep them away from the power lines. Con moved all the plants and things that could be airborn (except the swing. I am fairly sure the pergola will keep it from busting in through the french doors.)
We are ready. The rain has already started in southeast Houston. It should be here soon. Before any rain hit Galveston, there were streets that were 8 feet underwater from the storm surge alone.
I am concerned with the flooding going on in the coastal areas that Houston will not have anyway for our runoff to go.
I was just watching a reporter interviewing two women (one pregnant) and with two children. Basically asking them, "what the holy effing hell are you doing here?"
She said something about wanting to show her children just how scary the sea can be (um.. and deadly, too, dumbass). She said she had no way to leave and she had a dog. They have been broadcasting for DAYS how to contact the city and where to go and the city will get you out and take you to shelter.
Then she said, "I was afraid if I left when I came home there would be nothing there."
So... what the hell is her plan for when the house is destroyed while she and her babies and dog are in it? Sometimes I feel like you should have to take an iq test before being allowed to leave the hospital with your children. Then again, there would be a shit ton of orphans.

Date: 2008-09-12 07:31 pm (UTC)Last night the newscasters were talking to a woman with toddler to young school age children who also had one in a new baby stroller. She told the news that she was confident that God was going to push the storm somewhere else and we weren't going to be hurt, so that's why she could be walking on the seawall with confidence.
Some people. I kinda hope CPS saw that. To intentionally put your kids in THAT much danger is just... wow!
