American Idol
May. 13th, 2004 11:58 pmI cannot begin to express how sick I am of hearing about how the American Idol voting is proof of racism. It is not. It is proof of how an immature demographic with too much damn time of their hands and misplaced empathy and poor taste in music can put a large portion of the country in a ridiculous uproar about things that, in comparison to the horror that is happening elsewhere, are insignificant.
The arguments I hear are so damn weak and pathetic. With every argument I rebuff, they twist their own argument, and it is still weak.
In season one two of the last 4 contestants were black. Justin was runner up and half black. And quite frankly, in this country.. if you are a little black, most people just go ahead and lump you into black. As the mother of a half black boy, I have seen it.
Season two: two of the last 4 are black. Black man wins.
This season last time I checked ( only on internet, only catch glimpses of the show now and then) the last 4 had two black people in it.
This is seeming pretty damned equal ( or actually more favoring to black people) considering when you compare it to the actual population breakdown in this country.
Jennifer hudson has a voice suitable for broadway. She should do great there. Simon made Jasmine cry and the teeny boppers felt sorry for her, so she gets to stay. I heard her sing other times, she is not bad. Just sucked that night.
Here is the deal. We cannot pick a president, we cannot pick congressmen. Shocker, we cannot pick singers. Of course this is a popularity contest.
And one last thought. A big part of this may have nothing to do with race, it may just be that we are tired of people running their fucking voice up and down the scale and calling that singing. I grew up listening to blues, and jazz, and soul and everything Motown. Not a single one of the best singers would just run the damned scale for half a song and expect anyone to think they were proficient with their instrument, let alone gifted.

That is until....she wanted a Score bar. Fuck the dear little African children then. Score bars were on sale at stop and go.
