OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG!!!!!!

Did you know that they do cataract surgery under LOCAL anesthesia?!?!? WHAT THE HELL!!!! I couldn't even be TOLD I was going to have cataract surgery unless I was under a general.

That is like the subject of a horror movie!!!!

I know. I have come up with a name for this: Ocular PTSD.

I had my vasectomy under local. I was so loopy from the valium that I asked the doctor why he specialized in holding dicks all day.

He said he didn't know why he went in to men's medicine, just that he felt it was his calling.

I didn't push him further on it. If you think its your calling to hold dick for a living, then more power to you.

I've heard the eye surgery is done under local anesthesia. They put some sort of Clockwork Orange type torture device on you.

This is one of the reasons why my eyesight is still wretched. I don't want to pay for the surgery. I don't want to risk the surgery. AND I DON'T WANT TO LIE IN TRACTION WHILE A LASER AND/OR SCALPEL MUTILATES MY EYEBALL.

I've watched cataract surgery, saw everything through the same microscope the surgeon was using, it's not that big of a deal and you don't feel anything. It can be a little creepy I guess, depending on what type of surgery they're doing, but I've never known anyone to suffer PTSD because of it.

Cheekin. Bwak Bwak.

I had Lasik. It wasn't that bad. I didn't feel or see anything...

but I did smell the laser burning my eye. It smelled like burnt hair... and that wasn't something I was prepared for. :P

Oh please don't scare me, I am concerned in the future if I ever have to undergo glaucoma surgery if the drops no longer do keep the pressures down.

Laser surgery too, I believe.

Is it local or conscious anesthesia? There's a difference. One, you're subjectively awake. The other, you're awake but they pump you so full of benzos you get amnesia and don't remember a thing. That's the kind they use for, say, a colonoscopy.

Yeah, it freaks me out too.

It's conscious, I guess. I do remember they hooked up an IV into my hand several minutes before they took me in for the surgery, but they kept nudging me whenever I tried to fall asleep.

So sounds like a version of conscious. They probably pumped you full of narcotics so it wouldn't hurt, but no benzos so you were "awake" for the entire procedure.

Well, they DO drug you up, but they need you awake for the procedure.

They used some sort of clamp so that I wouldn't be able to blink, but whenever I started passing out, they would nudge me awake. I guess they needed to have my eyeball not roll up.

Yeah, it was pretty fun having your vision suddenly turn red as they cut into your eye.

Weee!!!

LOL well I had *TWo* cataract surgeries, it had been done twice, since they grew back, left overs that were missed from the first time... as a baby. So, surgery has to be done in general aneasthesia for that purpose. ... No fun at all! I wouldn't want to be awake while the surgeon worked on my eyes! I've had enough of that!

I would need to be knocked out. Seriously could not handle. I was awake for a knee surgery and the crunching sound made me gag. Eyeballs would be worse.
