sereneorange: (creepy old tongue guy)

A few years ago, my sister and Con went to a Chocolate exhibit at the Museum of Fine Art in Houston. She brought home the most amazing chocolate bar ever:

Red Fire Bar by Vosges.

"Red Fire: Mexican ancho & chipotle chillies + Ceylon cinnamon + dark chocolate, 55% cacao"

mmmmmmmm... It is a crisp, smooth dark chocolate bar. I would place a square on my tongue and it would slowly melt to leave a nice spicy fire in its chocolaty wake.

Their web site lists the inspiration
"Originally, cocoa beans were crushed and mixed with vanilla, cornmeal and chillies in a frothed drink. When Spanish conquistadors brought the beans back to Spain, new recipes were created by removing the spices and adding sugar, and mainstream chocolate consumption was born. Vosges takes chocolate back to its roots with the Red Fire bar, blending dark chocolate with ancho and chipotle chili peppers and Ceylon cinnamon. "

At $7.50 a bar, and it not being located at a lot of stores, we were ever on the search for a cheaper and more attainable version.

Most were god awful.

I was in Walgreens the other night and saw that Lindt has a version. The Excellence Chili Bar is a decent replica. It is not nearly as spicy, but it is delicious.

It is also easier to find and under $3.00. While I would like a Vosges bar, this one will do in a pinch.

Also, as I see [livejournal.com profile] bibliovixen recently found, I think a lot of you would like Vosges' Bacon Bar.

Although, for obvious reasons, that sounds absolutely disgusting to me.

Had I not read your review here I would see the chili chocolate bar and think, "Noooo thank you!" However, I may try it now. You sold me on it. hehe. Bacon though? Even if you weren't veggie, and sung its praises...I'd pass. lol.

people keep saying how delicious it is. It is probably because of the salty factor. Salt and chocolate go well together.

I think I just don't want meat touching my desserts. Chocolate can go a lot of places, but not with dinner.

I felt similarly until I tried it. The bacon is so finely ground that the flavor is pretty subtle. It's lovely. And marilyn is right about the salt.

We carry a lot of Vosges products at the store I work at and I must say that the fire bar and the bacon bar are awesome. Their Barcelona bar ( I believe it's grey sea salt and almonds) is awesome too.

You know, I slowly cooked together milk, sugar, cocoa powder, chipotle powder and cinnamon, and drank it. Kid you not, the effect was narcotic. It was like a drug, and it stayed in my system for at least 24 hours. There's a reason the Aztecs did that, lol!

Just not a fan of the chocolate and bacon concept. Love 'em both...just don't think they'd mix on my palette well.
