I am making my food for my bento box for tomorrow's lunch. A nice little carmelized tofu with brussel sprouts and green onions and I thought I would make some sushi rice for some onigiri.

I am following a recipe because I have never made onigiri and I am not a natural cook. I burned the rice (I am used to making jasmine rice. Not sticky rice) and then made the rice vinigar, sugar, and salt mixture and microwaved it for 45 seconds. Not only did it choke the hell out of me. My whole house smells like someone baked sour feet.

I am pretty sure I am just going to make some more sticky rice and just season it and slap some nori on it. I can't take the vinegar smell again.

goddamn..

Getting a super cute bento box is on my birthday wish list. The family has been informed. Oh yes, I will be cutting out star shaped fruit, and yes....cute little things of rice and veggies as well. I can't wait. Here's hoping they find one that I like.

Mmmm..now I'm hungry just reading about what you'll be having.

box I ordered. I needed one for work that I can microwave. If I enjoy this I might buy pretty ones for home.

I learned about Bento boxes during my anthropology class this semester and I find them do interesting. How did you hear about them and what motivated you to make one?

livejournal was pimping this community [livejournal.com profile] eat_my_bento and I started looking through them. It seemed like a nice creative outlet while doing something healthy for myself as well.

I never cook. I am just not a natural cook. I need to. I am hoping it will help me see food differently. See it as something creative, ceremonious, and healthy to do for me as opposed to something to shove in my gullet and keep working, or eat quickly because my blood sugar is too low, or to munch while I am bored.

This is on its way to me as we speak.

Ohhhh. I don't know if you read about what traditional bento's (when we learned about them they were called "obentos") are for but Japanese women make them for their nursery school children. It's a way to teach the child obedience and conformity interestingly enough. I misread your post at first and thought that you were making it for Connor lol.

I think it's a really good idea to make this kind of thing for yourself though. Paying attention to food really makes you enjoy it more and changes your eating habits (usually for the better). Good luck with your bento! And that packaging is absolutely adorable!

I have .I read the history behind them. Very cool. The lunchbox web site http://lunchinabox.net/ (which won some family blog award) if full of her making them for her little one and herself. Lots of cool recipes.

I ordered a manga cookbook that Connor wanted and it is coming with a bento box. He will learn with me.
