When you are in a group of people that are all your color and one of them says something kind of bitgoted assuming that you will be cool with it because you are the same color/ other group as they are.

This is usually done by someone that doesn't know me very well. They wouldn't have said it if they knew my kid was mixed, I heart the gay community, I have Arabic friends, I have a Jewish father, etc.

Sometimes I say something to let them know I think what they said is very not cool. Lately, I enjoy a new game. I like to let them say something a few times, then bring it up. I want them to recall the things they said before and feel like even more of a dick. I want them to have done it a few times, so they cannot try to just paint there most recent comment like it was taken wrong or came out wrong. Hard to prove you aren't a bigot when you have said bigoted things 4-5 times.

Most recently, I have had a reason to wait a week or two, then bring a photo of Connor and put it on my desk and proudly point out my handsome son. I just want to wait a few more comments weeks.

That is an absolutely fantastic idea. I love that, and am going to steal it. That way, as you said, it can't be just brushed off as one comment taken wrongly, or misstated.

But at the same time, I wish things like this weren't necessary, and I'm sorry you have reason to do what you're doing.

What I really used to love doing was this one:

I worked at BankOne/ Chase for 5 years as a Telephone Banker/ Online Banker. People would call in and since I sound white (because I am) they felt it was okay to say things about those "darkies" those" gooks" those "damn mexicans" ect.

I just simply became whatever race they were talking about. I would say, "Sir/ Ma'am, I am black" or "I am vietnamese" or "I am Hispanic"

I liked their sputtering and back peddling" It was the only thing I could do. I wasn't really allowed to scold the customers.

My boss gave me an odd look, but after I told her why I said what she overheard, she would just giggle and say "another one?" when I would start claiming other races.

It has never happened to me either and I'm sorry that it has happened to you. Although someone I know vaguely her now husband had some racist comments on his facebook profile. i immediately reported it :(

Hell, I even heard racist comments about white people when I was standing with various POC who thought I was hispanic (I have been known to tan as dark as my black/white kid- all about the sunscreen now)

I said, "Say what? " and then someone was all "oh shit.. you are white right? "
